Hazelnut is having quite the adventure this afternoon! On sunny days like this we like to get the sleds out to play. There is a big hill on the far side of the farm that drops into a draw. If you sled fast enough you can go from the top of the big hill, through the draw and up the other side. We get going fast enough that the snowboarders would be jealous!

Hazelnut & Lynn Sledding!

We use these sleds for more than just fun. These sleds have a very important job on the farm. If we have a sheep down in the pasture and we need her back to the barn, we can roll her into the sled and take her back. Hazelnut and I were just out for a ride.

Have you ever wondered what it is like for a sheep to experience it’s first snow? Hazelnut was born in the spring after the snows had finished for the season. So the first snow of the season was quite exciting for her and the rest of our lambs! All of the lambs are very curious about their world turning white overnight. Hazelnut takes a few cautious steps to test out the snow to see what it is. Then a taste, look, she has some snow stuck on her nose!

Hazelnut Enjoys her First Snow

The sheep actually like to eat snow and we will see bite marks in the drifts. On the farm we do not rely on the snow for all the sheep’s water needs. It is important that they have plenty of water when they are eating hay. The sheep can get hay block in their stomachs if they don’t have enough water to re-hydrate the dried grass. So we keep a water tank or keep the creek open for them to drink after they fill up on hay. The sheep are so insulated with their wool sometimes in the morning they will wake up and have 4 or more inches of snow on their backs. They look like snow covered rocks!

This week Hazelnut meets the press on the Living Farm. Hazelnut had a very special guest from France. Anne-Laure Pham is the editor and chief of Zeste Magazine a bimonthly magazine with a circulation of 110,000 that is based in France.

Hazelnut the Sheep Meets the Press

Anne had a great time seeing all of the winter plants growing in our greenhouses. She especially loved feeding Hazelnut (not as much as Hazelnut did we are certain!). She even got Jamaica, Hazelnut’s shy cousin, to eat a little grain out of her hands.

We welcome every chance we can get to share the farm with the press. It is important to share the farm with the media so they can help people to learn about sustainable organic farms. The future of organic family farm’s like Hazelnut’s depend on how many people understand that small family farms need their support!

Share Hazelnut’s visit with the press with your friends and family. Don’t forget to stay tuned for next week when we look back at Hazelnut’s first snow!

Christmas trees are good for more than just hanging lights on them. Our sheep love to eat them! A part of our family tradition is to get a permit from the forest service and cut down a Christmas tree in the forest. This is a special part of the holidays for us and we enjoy our tree very much. After christmas we would put the tree near the compost pile and try to figure out what to do with it. A few years back the sheep were in the compost area when we put in the tree. A day later I noticed that the tree had been eaten right down to the trunk.

It took me a moment to realize that the sheep had eaten it! The next year I put out the tree and watched the sheep much the needles just like they were grass. I realized that the tree had lots of vitamins and minerals that the sheep needed and they enjoyed the tree. I love the fact that we can recycle the tree into a usable object for the farm.

Here is Hazelnut, Jamaica and Helen enjoying the Christmas tree. Once they got to eat part of it I gave the tree to the main flock. The first side was eaten in 6 hours and then I flipped the tree over and they totally had it all eaten by morning.
