Watch the video below to learn how you can have a high performance time efficient garden.
How to Have a Time Efficient Garden
Unlike the traditional row gardens of the past a high performance garden is designed to produce more food in the least amount of time. The beginning of this design comes long before you stick your hands in the dirt. This planning begins in the winter with my family around the dinner table. We discuss what they would like to eat in the coming years. I then take their thoughts and suggestions and sit with my garden plan for an afternoon plotting out how much to plant. This is key to taking less time. Only plant what you need. You can do this by estimating the amount that each plant will produce and only planting the amount of plants that will produce what you need for you and your family. For example, instead of planting and taking care of an entire package of lettuce seeds, you figure out what your family will eat and you plant only 20 plants in succession and will have less to take care of and will have fresh lettuce all season long.
Another way you can plan the design a time efficent garden is to keep your garden in a raised bed system. This allows for you to care for half of the space of a traditional row garden and also when done correctly grow 2x the amount of food in the same amount of space. Because of your planning and raised beds, weeding and garden chores go from 2-3 hours a week to just 15 minutes a day. Making your garden chores mainly just planting and harvesting. When your garden is full of enjoyable tasks like picking tomatoes instead of weeding the time will fly by while you are there. Do you remember how certain school days dragged on and on but summer break was always too short? When your garden is a beautiful escape the time you spend there will go quickly. Not only does this high performance system produce a time efficient garden, it also makes that garden virtually weed free.
