We made our Farm Wool Inserts after decades of farming in Colorado. Long days harvesting vegetables, feeding sheep in the snow, and standing on cold greenhouse floors taught us something simple: a layer of wool placed on top of the existing shoe liner can make your favorite shoes warmer, softer, and more comfortable. Soon everyone on the farm was wearing them.

A Custom Fit for Your Feet

Every shoe is shaped a little differently. That’s why your Farm Wool Inserts arrive as rectangles instead of being pre-cut into a one-size-fits-all shoe shape.

You cut them to fit your shoes and your feet.

The easiest method is to remove the existing liner from your shoe or boot, place it on top of the wool insert, trace around it with a marker, and cut along the line with a sharp pair of scissors. Then put your original shoe liner back into your shoe and place your new Farm Wool Insert on top of it with the latex side down.

Don’t have a removable liner? Simply trace around your foot and cut the wool to create an insert custom-sized for you. Because our wool is wet felted, you can cut anywhere you need to without worrying about the edges fraying.

If you’ve worn a scratchy wool sweater, you may be wondering whether putting wool in your shoes will make your feet itch. Not all wool feels the same. For our Farm Wool Inserts, we use fine wool selected for next-to-skin comfort. The soft wool creates a warm, cushioned layer under your feet without the coarse, scratchy feel many people associate with wool.

We also keep the way we process our wool simple. We wash it right here on our farm using mild dish soap and baking soda instead of harsh cleaning chemicals.

Even the hot water we use to wash the wool is heated by the sun through our solar hot-water system. It’s one more way we can turn the wool from our sheep into a useful product while keeping our processing simple and reducing the energy we use.

Easy to Care For

Wool is naturally easy to care for, so your Farm Wool Inserts don’t need a complicated cleaning routine.

When they need cleaning:

1. Hand wash in warm water with a small amount of mild soap.
2. Rinse gently with clean water.
3. Gently press  or wring out excess water. 
4. Lay flat on a towel to air dry completely before putting them back into your shoes.

Avoid putting your Farm Wool Inserts in the washing machine or dryer. The heat and agitation can change the size and shape of the wool felt. Between washings, simply remove the inserts from your shoes occasionally and allow them to air out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the wool make my shoes too tight?
Your Farm Wool Inserts may feel a little snug when you first put them in your shoes. That’s normal. As you wear them, the wool gradually compresses and conforms to the shape of your foot, creating a comfortable custom fit. If your shoes are already extremely tight, they may not have enough room for an additional layer.

What if I’m between sizes?
When in doubt, order one size larger. Your inserts arrive oversized and are designed to be trimmed, so it’s better to have a little extra wool than not enough.

Will the wool make my feet itch?
We use fine wool selected for next-to-skin comfort. The scratchy feeling many people associate with wool usually comes from coarse fibers that feel prickly against the skin. Fine wool fibers are softer and bend more easily against the skin, making them much more comfortable to wear. Our inserts create a soft layer of wool beneath your feet rather than the coarse, scratchy feel you may remember from an old wool sweater.

Will they help with stinky shoes?
Wool is naturally odor resistant. It helps manage moisture inside your footwear and can absorb and hold odor molecules within the fiber until the wool is washed. That can help keep your shoes and boots feeling fresher between cleanings.

Do I remove the liner that’s already in my shoe?
No. Your Farm Wool Insert sits on top of your existing shoe liner. Remove the liner temporarily to use it as a tracing pattern, then put the original liner back into the shoe and place your wool insert on top.

Which side goes down?
Place the latex side down and the wool side toward your foot. The latex backing helps keep the insert from sliding and bunching toward your toes.

Can I cut the inserts to fit my shoes?
Yes. That’s exactly what they’re designed for. Trace your existing shoe liner or your foot and cut the wool with a sharp pair of scissors. Because the wool is wet felted, you can cut anywhere without the edges fraying.

Can I use them in shoes without removable liners?
Yes. Simply trace around your foot and cut the insert to create your own custom shape.

Can I wear them all year?
Yes. We do. In winter, we appreciate the extra warmth. During warmer weather, the wool continues to provide cushioning, breathability,  odor control and moisture management.

What if I have a wool allergy?
If you know you have a wool allergy or have had a previous skin reaction to wool products, we recommend checking with your healthcare professional before using them.

Do the inserts contain latex?
Yes. The backing contains latex to help keep the insert in place. If you have a latex allergy, do not use Farm Wool Inserts in your footwear.

How do I clean them?

We even use solar-heated hot water when washing our wool, helping us reduce the energy needed to turn the fleece from our sheep into something useful for your everyday life.
