Creating an organic bug and disease resistant garden isn’t impossible. In an organic garden there is always a solution for allowing your garden to thrive. As we know from the last training video about the first characteristic of a high performance garden, Keeping Your Garden In Harmony with Nature, we know that any type of harsh chemicals can damage our soil food web. So, how do we keep the bugs and diseases away? The best preventative measure is to be vigilant in your garden. Take time everyday to get to know your plants when they are healthy, so that way you can catch a problem before it overrides your garden. Check for bugs and stay on top of maintaining your garden. This will only work if you have an environment that your plants can thrive in. This training video in the tomato greenhouse on my farm will help you to keep your garden bug and disease resistant. If you already have an invasion of bugs you will want to watch our Beneficial Insects Series. This will help you to beat back the insects with incredible organic relationships with other beneficial insects!

The 3 Environmental Changes You Can Make in Your Garden

1) Keep Your Garden Organic

I know this is in the title of the blog post, but it is so important! Not introducing non-organic chemicals will allow your plants to create beneficial relationships with their soil food web. When you introduce harsh chemicals you break the soil food web’s symbiosis with the plant and make your plant to have to rely on it’s next “fix” to get better, instead of allowing it to handle an attack with it’s natural barriers. You can easily take care of any problem that arises without the use of harmful chemicals. Your garden should never have a non-organic solution introduced as the answer. Mother Nature takes care of bugs and diseases organically and we can too.

2) Feed Your Plants

A healthy plant is not as likely to be diseased or attacked by insects. Bugs are attracted to plants that are weak and distressed and not to the robust plants you will find in a high performance garden. Each plant needs the same 17 basic nutrients that we need to live. The best way to feed your plants is with compost and compost teas. (I have a great recipe for an easy compost tea that you will want to use for your plants!) There is never a reason to interrupt the soil food web by feeding your plants chemical fertilizers.

3) Create the Optimum Environment

It is important to keep your plants in an environment that does not support disease and pests. Too much water and not enough light are breeding grounds for disease and pests to take over. Keeping your garden correctly watered is crucial for the health of your plants and the bug and disease resistance. Correct planning for your garden’s location and careful watering habits are great preventatives for pest and disease control.
