On the farm succession planting is a key element to our success with our salad mixes. We supply lettuce to our local grocery store through the growing season, it wouldn’t do to bring tons of lettuce one week and not have fresh lettuce next week! The same concept works well in your home garden. Instead of planting 300 lettuce plants at a time what if you spread out your lettuce plants over your growing season? Then your family has a steady access to the best possible produce all season long. This applies to much more than lettuce! Join me in one of the farm’s greenhouses to discuss succession planting theory.
Easy Succession Planting in Your Garden
Great succession planting begins with knowing your plants. This begins when you are ordering your seed packets. Finding out how long it takes for your plants to mature is important to how you plan your garden according to your region. When you know how long the plant takes to mature you can plan to fill the rest of your gardening season with another plant that works well for the temperature changes. For example, once you know that one plant will mature at 8 weeks you can plan for the next crop to take it’s place once it has matured. When you keep your garden beds full in this way you can enjoy harvest all season long. When you plant the next crop you can get ahead of the growing season by not planting seed but seedlings. This will give you a head start that will help you to truly master succession planting quickly.
Feel free to explore the methods and varieties that work best with you and your growing season. As you flow between a warm and cold season garden you will find a rhythm that best matches your needs.
